Sieglinde Schoen Smith’s quilt collection was donated by her husband, William Smith. He made the decision to find a place that would allow her quilts to be seen rather than have them stored in a trunk. The Museum is so thrilled to have the quilts and have placed them on a permanent display. Our Museum is a little out of the way yet, well worth the trip.
She made “Mother Earth and Her Children” after the death of her son. She spent a year and a day working in the basement on this quilt. It is all hand pieced, hand embroidered and hand appliqued. When the quilt was completed, she entered it into the International Quilt Show in Houston, Texas. They mailed it to Houston and several weeks later they received a call from IQS inviting them to attend the show. Sieglinde was named Best of Show for the 2006 Quilt Show. This was her first quilt and also the first time to enter a show
We have many of her quilts on display. Photographs can’t do justice to the quilts. You need to see them and study all the details that went into the work.
